Tokyo Mew Mew New

Tokyo Mew Mew New (stylized as Tokyo Mew Mew New~♡) is the second anime adaptation of the second Tokyo Mew Mew manga series, made in commemoration of the 65^th anniversary of the first Nakayoshi issue.

Somewhat similar to the 2002 anime adaption, it is a reboot that follows the same general plot of five girls, each infused with the D. N. A of an endangered animal, becoming super-powered heroines and using their newly-found powers to defeat aliens. Directed by Natori Takahiro, the first season of this anime premiered on July 6^th, 2022 and ended on September 20^th, 2022. Season 2 aired in April 4^th, 2023 and ended on June 20^th, 2023.

A total of 24 episodes were aired, split into two 12 episode seasons.

The show broadcasts weekly on the following channels: TXN, AT-X, and BS TV Tokyo.

The first opening theme is "Cat!! Shite SuperGirls" and the first ending theme is "Tokimeki☆Ichigo Ichie". The second opening theme is Megamorphose ♡ and the second ending theme is Can-do Dreamer. The four songs are performed by Smewthie, an idol group comprised of the main characters' voice actresses (Yūki Tenma, Mirai Hinata, Ryōko Jūni, Rian Toda and Momoka Ishii).

The series was licensed by Sentai Filmworks, who has given it an English simulsubbed, streamed release on Hi-Dive, with a home video released planned.

On February 22^nd, 2020, a teaser website appeared with the only content being a countdown timer, and mention of an upcoming announcement referred to as "Tokyo Mew Mew New".

Details about the new project were scarce. The countdown timer ended on April 2^nd, 2020, revealing that Tokyo Mew Mew was set to receive a new anime adaption under the name Tokyo Mew Mew New. Two hours later, Nakayoshi also announced the news.

Aside from the title, very little was initially known about the new project. However, the official website revealed that Pony Canyon's voice acting office, Swallow, was holding auditions to find a new voice actress to play Ichigo Momomiya. The winner of the auditions will also be performing as an in-character idol in the "Tokyo Mew Mew New" idol group, "Smewthie".

On February 2^nd, 2021, the 10th Tokyo Mew Mew New Prologue video was released, in which Yuuki Tenma learned that she would be awarded the role of Ichigo during a video call with Saki Nakajima.

The 11th prologue video revealed the new voice actresses for Minto Aizawa, Retasu Midorikawa, Bu-Ling Huang, and Zakuro Fujiwara, and showed clips of their auditions.

Smewthie's first performance was during the TOKYO MEW MEW NEW Online Event "1st MEW♡ting" Livestream, where they performed Bitter Sweet Darling and Resolution of Colors. This same Livestream also revealed a teaser picture for the anime and the idol group's name and logo. Near the end of the Livestream, a letter from Mia Ikumi was read to Smewthie, and they were shown a piece of art that Ikumi had drawn for them.

On July 22^nd, the first key visual, featuring all five core members of Tokyo Mew Mew, was released during the もぎたて！Smewthie #4 Livestream. After the Livestream ended, a short PV was uploaded to the official YouTube channel, showcasing not only the new character designs, but also featuring voice clips for each Mew.

On February 22^nd, 2022, it was revealed that the anime would be broadcasted in July. They also revealed the character designs and voice actors for Masaya Aoyama, Ryo Shirogane, Keiichiro Akasaka and Masha. A short PV was shown with the voices of the Mews, the boys, and Masha.

Differences between the Manga, 2002 Anime and Tokyo Mew Mew New[]

Mew Mew New has several differences from the original anime adaptation and is loosely based on the manga:

While the Mew Mews are voiced by newer seiyuu, the supporting characters are voiced by veteran seiyuu like Yuma Uchida or Yuichi Nakamura.
Minto's personality has undergone some changes; in New, she's much nicer and calmer towards Ichigo and Bu-Ling, also showing herself to be dedicated to her Mew Mew duties while managing to retain her usual laid-back lifestyle. Additionally, she now wears her hair down as a civilian as opposed to her characteristic buns.
- She is also the first Mew to join the team, already having joined pre-series, whereas in the manga and 2002 anime, she was the second Mew Mew to join, the first being Ichigo.
Ichigo, Minto, and Retasu are all in High School as opposed to Junior High School.
Seiji, who was not a character in the original manga and only featured in a single episode of the 2002 anime now has a bigger role in the series.
Due to New's setting being in the early 2020s, the technology and science are now updated to fit the modern era:
- The characters own smartphones instead of flip phones.
- The animal species that face extinction has is increased from 2,500 to 15,000.
Mew Ichigo has bright red hair in Mew form, whereas her 2002 and Manga counterparts had sugar pink hair.
